How to Clean Mesh and Knit Running Shoes

Modern runners are mostly engineered mesh and knit — light, breathable, and great at trapping sweat, dust and grass stains. The good news is they clean up easily if you skip the washing machine.

Why not the machine?

Machine cycles batter the midsole foam, loosen the glue and can warp the shape. You lose cushioning and lifespan to save ten minutes. Hand-cleaning is gentler and just as effective.

The routine

  1. Remove laces and insoles and clean them separately.
  2. Dry-brush loose dirt off the upper with a soft brush.
  3. Work a plant-based cleaner in small circles over the mesh — light pressure, the soft-bristle side only.
  4. Wipe with a damp microfiber towel; don't saturate the foam.
  5. Air-dry with paper inside, away from radiators.

A cleaning kit with a soft brush and microfiber towel covers all of this.

Keep them fresh between runs

Runners smell because they stay damp. Dry them fully with a no-heat dryer after wet or sweaty runs, and drop in odor pods between wears. Dry shoe, fresh shoe.
