You can clean and protect a pair perfectly and still ruin it in the closet. Storage is the step everyone skips.
Get the environment right
Store shoes somewhere cool, dry and dark. Heat and humidity break down materials and breed odor and mildew; direct sunlight fades color and yellows white soles and midsoles.
Hold the shape
Use shoe trees or stuff with paper so uppers don't crease and collapse — especially for leather and structured sneakers.
Store them clean and dry — always
Never put shoes away dirty or damp. Dirt sets in and moisture turns into odor and mildew over weeks. Clean and fully dry them first, then tuck in a couple of odor pods to keep the air fresh.
Long-term storage
For seasonal pairs, add silica packs to fight humidity, use breathable boxes (not sealed plastic), and keep them off the floor. They'll come out as fresh as they went in.
